Oregon Referee Institute
The Oregon Referee Institute is a unique and special event that the Oregon Referee
Committee first conducted in 1996. Subsequent editions were held in 1997, 1998,
1999 and 2001 and we hope to revive the Institute in the near future. We are not
aware of a similar program in the U.S.
Two things distinguish the Oregon Referee Institute. The first is our faculty. We always have recruited the
highest quality referees to instruct at the Institute. Along the way, we have had many of the U.S. and
Canadian FIFA referees participate.
Second, the Institute is about "hands on" and "common sense" refereeing. We ask the faculty that they
reference specific Laws of the Game infrequently. There are plenty of other programs available for people
to grind through the Laws. What we ask of our faculty is for them to share their experiences and
accomplishments as examples from which we can learn.
Our attendees consist of referees who for the most part work youth and adult games in our local parks. As
a result, we always ask our faculty to periodically mix in examples from their own experiences in local parks
along with those from international and professional games.
