Details on New Optional USSF Referee Uniform

Referees don’t take change well.  And, yes, IMHO, these shirts are pretty ugly.  It could be worse.  It could
be the Italian Serie A referee uniforms that glow in the dark.  I remember the “something the dog ralphed
up” Umbro shirts that MLS referees wore the first year, the unlamented fuchsia shirt and the old orange,
no stripes alternate shirt, inordinately well loved by those referees with no fashion sense and large
stomachs.

Just so everybody is clear on this, the new color is only “mandatory” to the extent that your partners on a
game (a) need to change to another color than yellow and (b) the crew doesn’t have a common color and
sleeve length to wear that also doesn’t clash with the player uniforms except for the new green.  Yellow,
new style or old, is still the primary color.

The new style is NOT mandatory.  Official Sports will only be producing the new style shirts, now in five
colors, but referees can wear the old style to their hearts’ content, provided the old one isn’t worn out.
Stripe “mix and match” crews are explicitly okay.  In other words, it isn’t a problem if one referee has the
new style shirt and the other two are wearing the old style, yes, even if you are being assessed.  Of
course, as you wear out your shirts, you will be replacing them with the new style.

Brand new referees, of course, will only be wearing the new style because that’s all that is available to
them.  With our usual turnover in referees, I anticipate that within two years “most” referees will be wearing
the new style, but the old style will still be “legal.”  I suspect that the red, blue and black alternates will be
worn for quite a while into the future, since they are not worn often enough to wear out for most referees.

Please pass this word on to our fellow referees who may be getting overheated about this topic.

Test your Laws of the Game knowledge at US Soccer’s "You Make the Call" video site

This site allows referees of all ages and grade levels to reinforce their knowledge of “The Laws of the
Game.  Users will be able to watch a video clip of a foul, along with a summary of the incident. The user is
given four choices as to what the referee’s decision should be. Upon submitting an answer, users will get a
summary of the results, the reason for the decision according to “The Laws of the Game,” and a short
explanation of the correct answer.

“You Make the Call” is an excellent learning tool for young referees who are still becoming familiar with
“The Laws of the Game.” It not only allows young referees to see the foul in real time, as well as replays, it
explains the correct decision, as well as why the other options are not correct, specifically citing “The Laws
of the Game.”
