If you are interested in taking your referee career to the next level, the ORC wants to help you. Below is a brief summary of current upgrade requirements. Contact the ORC office if you have additional questions- good luck!

From Grade 8 to Grade 7

Basic requirements:

  1. You must be at least 14 years old
  2. Minimum 1 year of US Soccer registration as a Grade 8 Referee
  3. Documented game count including at least 75 centers and 25 lines on US Soccer affiliated games with at least 5 centers at the U-17 level or above; adult games qualify

Upgrade process:

  1. Submit your game count to the ORC for verification and approval
  2. Submit the $75 upgrade application fee to the ORC
  3. Pass one center upgrade assessment at the U-17 boys level or higher*
  4. Pass the Grade 7 exam with a score of 80% or higher*
  5. Successfully complete the Grade 7 fitness test*
  6. Attend the Intermediate Clinic training course
  7. ORC Leadership Team will determine final approval
  8. Contact the ORC office to complete the process!

* These requirements must be completed within a 12-month period.

From Grade 7 to Grade 6 (Becoming a State Referee)

Basic requirements:

  1. You must be at least 18 years old
  2. Minimum 1 year of US Soccer registration as a Grade 7 Referee
  3. Documented game count including at least 50 centers and 25 lines on US Soccer affiliated games at the U-17 level or above; adult games qualify

Upgrade process:

  1. Submit your game count to the ORC for verification and approval
  2. Submit the $200 upgrade application fee to the ORC
  3. Pass three upgrade assessments; at least one on men’s open 2nd/O-30 1st division or higher*
  4. Pass the Grade 6 exam with a score of 80% or higher*
  5. Successfully complete the Grade 6 fitness test*
  6. Attend the State Clinic training course
  7. ORC Leadership Team will determine final approval
  8. Contact the ORC office to complete the process!

* These requirements must be completed within a 12-month period.
